Meet Salem, the visionary and energy behind the ‘Mathaf Deerah’ (متحف الديرة), a cultural gem nestled 31 kilometres northwest of Al Baha in Saudi Arabia.
“Since retiring, I have been doing what I love most: meeting folks from all walks of life, including foreigners, and showing them the cultural heritage of our community. Building the museum and restoring the traditional farm, is my true passion project. Retirement for me was not an end, but a beginning. No amount of time or money can stop me. I am truly blessed to contribute to something that holds such profound meaning for our community and nation.”
Why did you retire or why are you still working?

Salem, the founder of the "Neighbourhood Museum" near Al Baha, Saudi Arabia, uses his retirement to dedicate himself to preserving the cultural heritage of his community. He collects artifacts ranging from ancient tools to modern items and showing them in his newly housed “Mathaf Deerah”, along with a restored old traditional terraced farm and farmhouse. The museum features a collection of ancient agricultural tools, traditional clothing, jewellery, and other treasures generously contributed by friends, family, and strangers alike. Salem takes pride in the museum's visitors, including dignitaries who have commended his efforts. Through his museum and restoration work, Salem embodies the resurgence of interest in Saudi Arabia's cultural heritage, contributing to an officially encouraged surge of interest in Saudi Arabia’s rich history, which is growing. This initiative not only fulfils Salem’s passion but also reflects the retirement environment of his generation in Saudi Arabia. Governed by robust welfare policies during the last half-century, the country provides services like healthcare and education, with no income taxes and low pension contributions. The welfare system ensures that today’s Saudis retirees can pursue their passions post-retirement.
